A/Prof Ong Biauw Chi is Senior Consultant at Singapore General Hospital Department of Anaesthesiology. She also serves as Visiting Consultant to Outram Campus institutions. She was the Head of Anaesthesiology, SGH from 2009 till 2014. She was Director of Patient Safety and Director of Clinical Governance until August 2015 for a period of 9 years and has set up the Clinical Governance framework in Singapore General Hospital. She is actively involved in the Joint Commission International process and organizes and promotes quality improvement, safety and peer review in the hospital. A/Prof Ong has spearheaded and been involved in various Clinical Practice Improvement Projects and has won several awards in this area. She is also appointed Chairman Medical Board, Sengkang Health.
She teaches and trains undergraduates and postgraduate trainees with teaching appointments as Clinical Associate Professor with the Faculty of Medicine, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Associate Professor, Duke-NUS Medical School. In these roles, she is also involved in teaching patient safety and clinical quality. She was awarded the Public Administration Silver Medal in the National Day Awards, 2013 and the National Medical Excellence award for National Outstanding Clinical Quality Activist in 2014.
She was co-chair of the SGH Quality & Risk Management Network since 2006 till 2014. She has overseen and supported quality initiatives, including clinical quality, service quality, major accreditation & certification programs in Singapore General Hospital such as the Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. As a key member of the Hospital’s JCI taskforce, she is regularly invited to speak on JCI initiatives, patient safety, clinical governance and improvement processes around the region.
She held an appointment as Senior Consultant and Medical Advisor to the Ministry of Health’s Clinical Quality Branch till 2011. She has also been appointed to the Strategic Advisory Committee for quality improvement in the intermediate and long-term care sector by the Agency for Integrated Care.
In the area of informatics, she is involved in various IT initiatives including developing a platform for pre-operative assessment and post-operative follow-up of post-anaesthesia patients at Singapore General Hospital.
Prof Ong is a member of the Specialist Training Committee for Anaesthesia, now Residency Advisory Committee, Ministry of Health, Singapore and chairs the Examinations committee for Anaesthesia Examinations in Singapore.
